The Tampa area has recently begun sewer repairs which are expected to encounter traffic delays. Commuters on Gunn Highway in northwest Hillsborough County will experience some construction delays while new water and sewer lines are installed. Median crossovers and eastbound and westbound, inside travel lanes will be closed for 11 weeks in these two areas: between Lynn Turner Road and Hampton Park Boulevard, and between Veterans Expressway and Normandie Road. Temporary lane closings will be reopened at the end of each business day. Drivers can expect to see contractor employees and heavy equipment in the area. Some of the road will be covered with water as crews remove water from the pipe trench area and install the new pipe. The project is part of the Northwest Hillsborough Wastewater Consolidation Program, which will retire two aging wastewater plants and consolidate treatment at the northwest county treatment plant. The program will improve wastewater service in northwest Hillsborough County, improve reliability and save money for county water and sewer customers.
The city of Tampa spends $1 million to $2 million a year on wastewater lines and manhole repairs and conducts camera inspections along each stretch at least once every seven years – the industry standard.
