Rainy Season in Gainesville Keeps Sewer Lift Stations Busy

perma-main

The seasonal rainfall has been at an all-time high in the City of Gainesville.  Last week, City workers needed to pump storm water out of the sewer system’s lift station.  Residents were informed by the City of the necessity for the late night work in order to keep their homes safe from a sewer backup.  The lift stations are in place to help pump wastewater from low to higher elevations.  Due to the heavy rains all spring and summer, the inflow of both storm and ground water in the collection system, immediate action is needed to prevent a release into commercial and residential properties.   The water that is pumped out of the lift stations by the trucks is then transported to another area with more capacity in the wastewater collection system.  There are two reclamation facilities in Gainesville where the water is then moved to.  A contributing factor to the infiltration is the population in the residential community which has grown in recent years.  Subsequently, the lift stations were not readily capable of handling the rapid growth.  There has also been a notable problem in the sewers with the improper disposal of items such as baby wipes, plastic bags, and diapers which has conclusively been a contributor to an inundated pump station.
